Accreditation

Many people ask if a renewable energy installation can be completed by their local electrician. The short answer is “no”. Renewable energy presents a variety of unique requirements and hazards that are not present in the normal electrical industry, which is why specialised training is required to become an accredited installer.
Why should you use an accredited installer?

The Do's

If you plan to claim a payment from a renewable energy rebate scheme, or plan to connect to the grid with your installation, you must use an installer who is accredited with the Clean Energy Council (CEC).

Rebate schemes should not to be confused with feed-in tariffs. See Rebates & Incentives

The Dont's

If you use an installer who is not accredited, or you complete the installation yourself, you will not be eligible to claim any rebates. You are also very likely void product warranties, and if you connect to the grid, you may even have your unhappy energy retailer knocking on your door!

What's Required

To become an accredited installer, there are a number of prerequisites which must be met, with ongoing obligations that must be upheld.  These requirements alone set accredited installers apart from normal electricians.

The steps of CEC accreditation as an installer:

  • Get trained in specialised installation and maintenance techniques for renewable energy products.
  • Apply for provisional accreditation: This requires evidence of training, a current electrical contractors licence, working at heights certification, and public liability insurance of at least 5 million dollars.
  • Become a full member after work is inspected and approved.

Maintain accreditation by performing a required amount of training each year, to keep up to date on new industry developments.
